Wellness Design Tips for the Turn of the Season

Cooler evenings and shorter days ask something different of a home. Small changes that make interiors feel calm and comforting.

Warm autumn interior with layered throws and soft lamplight

As the light changes, rooms that felt right in July can feel flat by October. A few adjustments go a long way.

Move the light lower

Shorter days call for lamps rather than ceiling fixtures. Two or three low, warm light sources will transform a room more than any other seasonal change.

Add weight to the textiles

Heavier throws, wool rather than cotton, a rug layered over boards. Texture is how a room communicates warmth before the heating comes on.

Keep the daylight you have

Clean glass, drapery that pulls fully clear of the window, mirrors placed to bounce light further into the room. None of it is expensive and all of it is noticeable.

Make one corner genuinely comfortable

A good chair, a side table, a lamp and something to put a cup on. In the darker months, that corner does more for wellbeing than a whole scheme.
